A Positive Review: Richard Beck’s Investigation of 1 Peter 3

In the February issue of the Ichthus, Richard Beck takes a closer look at 1 Peter 3, an often controversial passage on “God’s plan for marriage.” Frequently interpreted as a justification for patriarchal domination, Beck breaks the passage down through close reading and contextualization to reveal that the popular use of 1 Peter 3 to

That’s Awkward: Maladroit Speech and a Limitless Gospel

In reflecting on one of my meetings on Wednesday, I complained to my roommates that I am awkward. Actually, worse than that: painfully awkward. In the meeting, I just couldn’t seem to say anything right; it was as if I had forgotten the basic rules of social grace and professionalism. Though I am typically a

The Directionality of Faith

Over the summer, I discovered Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s amazing work. I think he might be competing with Simone Weil as one of my favorite theologians. Word Association: “Christianity” and “unChristian”

Last week, I bought David Kinnaman’s book UnChristian: What a New Generation Really Thinks About Christianity… And Why It Matters. I’ve seen it floating around bookstores and has sat on my unending list of things to read for a while, so I finally picked it up for a family trip. Shortly after I cracked it

God the Poet

It took me until March of this year to reach that often ignored book of the Bible, Song of Solomon (or Song of Songs, depending on your translation). Growing up, it was a hushed topic, as though the book were marked “FOR MARRIED COUPLES ONLY” and closed to anyone without a wedding or engagement ring.
