Yup, I'm just being cynical (my dad is a computer/math teacher, and my younger brother is a professional computer programmer, so I've been surrounded by it my whole life:) I've just always been as disinclined towards the field as I am towards politics (which I'm equally as depedent on as a member of civilization). But really, shouldn't we try to shape the ideal city according to our own private whims and fancies? Where's the fun in having people who think differently from us, like poets, around? :)

Nick, I hope you can appreciate the irony of commenting on a BLOG on the INTERNET via your COMPUTER that you'd want to throw programmers (present company excluded, I hope?) out of the new creation!

That made me laugh that Plato wanted poets thrown out of his ideal city:) For me, it'd be either politicians or computer programmers, outside the walls of the new creation!

Another excellent post, Anne. You add such class to our organization; without you, we'd just be a bunch of scruffy philosophers.
