Advent and Incarnation

As I was studying for my Introduction to Christian Thought final exam, I came across this quote from Alister McGrath’s Historical Theology that I found applicable during this advent season: “Alexandrian writers placed considerable emphasis upon the idea of the Logos assuming human nature. The term ‘assuming’ is important; a distinction is drawn between the

The Insufficiency of Vague Moralism

“I am reminded of a story I heard years ago in Germany when Walter Ulbricht, the German Communist leader, was head of the German Democratic Republic.  It was said that Ulbricht once had a conversation with Karl Barth about the new society that was being built in East Germany.  Ulbricht boasted to Barth that the

A mirror and not a canvas

What a relief, to know that I do not have to have my whole future mapped out but instead am required to quietly and steadfastly depend on God. The ambiguity of my life on earth takes on new meaning as I understand that I am running a different sort of race than the world expects me to. Instead of looking within myself into what appears to be a muddle of ugly contradictions and faults for assurance, I know that I am to look to God. Instead of a blank canvas, calling me to paint my own destiny, I am meant to be a mirror reflecting Christ. Paul reminds us of this beautiful calling in his letter to the church in Ephesus and to all believers everywhere: “Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God”. Ephesians 5:1-2 (NIV)

One Thing

“Above all things and in all things, O my soul, rest always in God, for He is the everlasting rest of the saints.  Grant, most sweet and loving Jesus, that I may seek my repose in You above every creature; above all health and beauty; above every honor and glory; every power and dignity; above

Cubits and Comfort

Lately I’ve been reading through the book of Ezekiel. There are parts of this book that are often quoted because they are so readily applicable to our twenty-first century lives. God’s promise in chapter 34 to be Israel’s shepherd comes to mind—we know that Christians, too, have been made part of God’s flock, and so

The Government of the Beast

What is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? Psalm 8:4 What is man, that he should be clean? And he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous? Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean
